Marshall Dixon Burney, son of Guilford and Catherine Dixon Burney, was born 7 Jun 1847 in Pike County, Alabama. He served with the 63rd Regiment, Alabama Infantry (2nd Alabama Reserves) during the Civil War. He married Amanda Hester some time before 1885, and they had one child, Robert Lee Burney (1885-1928).
Marshall is shown on Texas County Tax Rolls in Atascosa County as early as 1887. Other records are sketchy, but his wife Amanda died before 1900, since the 1900 Federal Census shows Marshall as being a widower.
Marshall Dixon Burney died 15 May 1908 and is buried in plot number 156, Amphion Cemetery in Atascosa County.
He is mentioned in an article in the Handbook of Texas online as being one of the early settlers of Atascosa County.
